Repurposing plastic bottles to
grow trees for future forests!
Discarded plastic beverage bottles could be an alternative growing container for plant nurseries in developing countries. Ordinarily, these bottles have a very short lifespan and, where recycling and waste management are limited, may end up contributing to local litter issues. Using these discarded plastic bottles for growing containers has the two-fold advantage of reducing waste and reusing these bottles to help replant or maintain important ecosystems. Researchers at New Mexico State University, Oregon State University, Purdue University, and the US Forest Service are currently investigating bottle modifications that optimize seedling development.
